Congress Vows Sustained Fight to Protect MGNREGA, Kharge Warns Against Any Dilution
Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge says the party will continue a sustained fight to protect MGNREGA, warning against any move that threatens the rural employment scheme. He highlights Rahul Gandhi’s role in Parliament and vows action inside and outside the House to defend workers’ rights.
Kharge underlined that Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, has repeatedly raised concerns over MGNREGA during parliamentary proceedings, highlighting the scheme’s importance for rural livelihoods. He added that the party’s efforts have not been limited to the legislature alone, noting that Congress has also mobilised public movements beyond Parliament to defend the Act and draw attention to the challenges facing rural workers.
According to Kharge, any step that undermines or weakens MGNREGA will be met with sustained resistance from the Congress. He made it clear that the party is prepared for a prolonged struggle to protect the rights guaranteed under the law, stressing that rural labourers depend on the scheme for economic security and dignity.
Kharge further stated that Congress will fight at every level to ensure the rollback of what he described as a “new law” that poses a threat to MGNREGA. He emphasised that the party’s objective is not only to preserve the legal framework of the scheme but also to safeguard the interests and rights of millions of rural workers who rely on it for employment and income support.
The renewed assertion by the Congress leadership places MGNREGA firmly at the centre of the political debate, underscoring its continued relevance in discussions on rural welfare and social protection. As concerns over employment and rural distress persist, the party’s stance signals that the future of the scheme is likely to remain a contentious and closely watched issue in national politics.
